It may be interesting for you if you don't know that android names are in alphabetical order and it is always named after a dessert.

In Nov.07 came the first official version 1.5 called Cupcake, then Dounut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice-cream sandwhich, Jelly bean and the latest version KitKat.

While they are busy developing thier mobile operating system, a group in India wants the next version of android to be named as Ladoo. Last year also, the shopping search site pricebaba launched a campaign to convince google to name the new version after Indian Sweet Kaju katli, but thier ambitious goal ultimately ended in defeat after following google's announcement.

a north-Indian dessert, ladoos

Undeterred by thie failure, they are back with a fresh campaign to once again try to convince google to name their next version of android Ladoo, following the alphabetical order.

The campaign video is a bit funny and I never expected such a campaign, but it is good, such things exist. Many people in India are having thier own debate on this topic.

It wouldn't hurt to hear the next android version as Ladoo. You can support the campaign too at ladoo.co and help them to convince google.

13th nov 2013 had a great thing to notice, A hackathon for women. Most hackathons around the world focuses on tech platforms, software language, business development or other related topics, but a hackathon organised by Grace Hopper India, in Bangalore had a very different and innovative topics.

Hack

Organised only for female developers and students, the event focused on free and open source software based humanitarian projects. The top three major project frame works were : -
  • MifosX
  • Bachchao (Hindi for Help)
  • Clinical Reminders

More than 100 women from the Tech Field attended the event and contributed to areas like financial inclusion, locations & maps, safe areas, and health & medicine.

MifosX is a free and open source financial-service system. Some of the hackathon participants worked with the MifosX framework to build a platform that enables financial-service providers to serve an estimated 2.5 billion poor and unbanked people globally. It takes the form of a management information system for microfinance institutions to manage and track funds, loans, installments, savings, deposits and related reports for accounting and analysis.

The favourite topic was the the Bachchao project, that focused on custom crowd sourced maps that highlights information about local police stations, hotels, accomodation and NGOs. This can be a great help for the women travellers worried about their safety. This project was started last year during the Grace Hopper India event.

The Clinical Reminders system brought the female techies together to build and work on a Web service that gives reminders and alerts on medication, tests, immunizations or medical examinations.

My Opinion :
It was a great step towards motivation of women community and concerned about their safety and health. The event could have been much better if it had not been resticted to only women.

The windows 8.1 comes with a smart button, improved multi tasking, smarter search and a broader array of compelling apps. But using it on your old desktop with a keyboard and a mouse may not be the perfect thing to do. Having a tablet or a hybrid along with the new OS allows you to get the most out of the windows 8.1. Afterall, it is tailored for touch and 2 in 1 devices. With so many manufactures bringing their own tab and hybrid customized for windows 8.1, it may be difficult for you to choose the best. Here we review the microsoft surace pro 2 that can be your next choice to opt for.

read more about windows 8.1 here

 Microsoft Surface Pro 2

With Intel's 4th-Generation core series Haswell processor and a fast SSD it can be a great option for business users. More important, surface pro 2 is expected to last longer on a charge. Other highlights include a vibrant 1920 x 1080, 10.6-inch display with an active stylus.

Screen size (diagonal)10.6 inches

Other good options can be acer Iconia W4, Lenovo Ideapad Yoga Pro 2 and Dell XPS 12.

What do you have to say?
When you'll enter windows 8.1 home page, you'll we welcomed with a bold white message "The New Windows" on a colourful detatchable laptop in the background and there itself you get the hint that it is best suited for hybrid touch interface.

Coming to the price:- the good news is windows 8.1 is for free and the bad news - only for windows 8 users. So if you're not using a registered windows 8, you need to pay $119.99 ( Rs. 7587 approx ) to buy the full version.

Pros :

  • Improved multi tasking - better performance
  • Universal search
  • Better pre-loaded apps
  • Better multi-monitor support
  • More ways to personalise your PC

Cons :
  • Better for a touch-interface than usual keyboard desktops.
  • May take a while to get used to.

When windows 8 was launched last fall most of the people were reluctant to upgrade to windows 8 as microsoft made some changes like removing the start button and adopting the new start page which was more touch-friendly. Now they are back with windows 8.1 with start button and many more features like universal search, better apps, IE 11, screen splitting etc.

The above video was released by microsoft prior to its launch, where Jensen Harris from the windows team shows what to expect from the new windows.

Windows 8.1 is a clear improvement over Windows 8, and for that Microsoft should be commended. The split-screening is effective.
Windows 8.1 view 4
But the OS is not out of the woods yet. There are still a lot of intuitive things Microsoft could be doing here; options that seem so forehead-slappingly obvious, such as a screen of currently running apps, they probably should have gone into this update.

You can upgrade or buy the new windows here

Motorola has officialy unveiled thier new phone moto G at an event in Sau Palo, Brazil. This colourful smarty will be available in atleast 30 countries by 60 google partners by 2014. The Google-owned handset maker has announced that the Moto G will be sold through the company's website in the US, with no contract, no SIM lock and an unlockable bootloader at $179 (Rs. 11,300 approx) for the 8GB storage model, while the 16GB variant will be available at $199 (Rs. 12,600 approx). The tough truth is, there's no option for memory expansion. It'll be available in India around Jan'14.

motorola-moto-g-big.jpg

Coming to the specifications - the Gorilla Glass 3 covered smartphone has a 4.5-inch 1280x720p edge-to-edge display. A great point to note is that the insides of the smartphone has a water-resistant nano-coating which make this phone stand above other phone in its segments.

The phone runs on Snapdragon 400 chipset with a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, Adreno 305 GPU along with 1GB RAM. The smartphone runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean from the get go and Motorola says that the Android 4.4. Kitkat update will be available in January 2014. You get a 5MP camera on the back and the front has a 1.3MP video-calling camera. Similar to the rest of the phones around this budget. A 1950mAh battery powers the entire package.
Motorola had left the Indian market for a while, but they are returning with moto G this new year. A peculiar thing I notice these days are the colours, whether it is budget phone Nokia Asha or the iPhone 5C, they are coming in with vibrant colour options to choose. Following the same trend, moto G is available in a bunch of colours such as red, yellow, blue, and more. Another thing to note is the price. Dennis Woodside, Motorola's CEO himself  said, "Today, we're introducing Moto G, a smartphone that delivers a premium experience for a third of the price of current high-end phones." and I feel this will be true.

I needed a decent phone this new year and I think moto G can get a place in my pocket.

This chilly morning, I have got you a news that'll give you a little bit of warmth. The rank one social networking site (yeas, Facebook) , had earlier announced that the phone number integration with their messenger app was in limited beta testing on iOS till now. But now you can download the updated version on your iphone or android smartphone. This option now gives the app the added flexibility of allowing you to message your friends who are in your phone’s contacts list, but not on Facebook.

Get the new messenger here.

The interface has been given a makeover as well, with the cleaner look and a redesigned icon.
Clearly the pressure is now on Whatsapp, with Facebook Messenger also jumping in the fray for a pie of the instant messaging market. The current IM ecosystem leader was already facing pressure from the BlackBerry Messenger, which has seen a rather exciting launch recently, and already added more than 10 million users on Android alone in the first week of launch. Whatsapp currently has around 300 million users, and counting.

On the left is the Facebook Messenger for Android, and on the right is the app installed on an iPhone. The competition with Whatsapp is certainly going to be a rather fiery battle, but Whatsapp could be the underdog in the pack, if it manages to retain the current level of excitement.
Interestingly, Facebook has moved away from trying to integrate the system SMS as well, at least on Android, and instead focusses its attention on the larger IM user base, including those who may have deliberately stayed away from making a Facebook profile till now.

If you have decided to get a brand new pair of headphone for yourself, then doing a little bit of research will help you get the best from the lot. If you're in the market for a new pair, here are a few tips to take the mystery out of the purchase. Consider these seven points and you'll be able to find the right headphones for you.

Colorful-headphones

1. Think about when you'll use them.

The first thing to ask yourself is what you'll be using the headphones for. Are you looking for a pair that can stay balled up in your messenger bag? Will you be taking them to the gym for your workout? Will they accompany you on international plane trips? Or will you be hooking them up to a hi-fi stereo for intense listening?
Knowing what you want headphones for will probably influence the other factors in your decision-making process, so assess how, where and when you plan to use them.

2. Set a budget (and stick to it).

Black earbuds

If you're a gadget geek, the headphone search can easily make a big dent in your wallet. Do some research and get a sense for the price ranges on models that most appeal to you. Spending a fortune on an expensive set of cans that will get sweaty during your workout doesn't make sense.
Tech often runs on the principle that you get what you pay for. When you just need a basic pair for listening on the go, your price point can be much lower. If you want a product that focuses more on audio fidelity and quality, expect to shell out accordingly. For people who really want to break the bank, some companies let you order earphones custom-fitted to your ears.
The good news is that for almost any combination of headphone traits you want, you can find a budget option. Just make sure you know your upper limit before hitting the stores, and stick to it.

3. Over-ear vs. on-ear vs. in-ear.

For starters, this can be a question of comfort. Some people hate having buds settled in their ears, while others feel that over-ear cans are too heavy over long periods of time. If you haven't had a chance to use both styles, ask around among your friends. They might have a set they could loan you as a trial run.
On a more technical side, the key distinction among these styles is sound quality. Cheap earbuds may be portable, but because of their fit and placement in the ear, you'll miss out on a lot of bass notes. Some in-ear models are designed to have a better fit and improved audio experience, but few will be able to match the sound of the bigger styles.
On-ear and over-ear look similar, but the on-ear style will have a smaller earpad than the over-ear, which is designed to actually touch your head. The benefits of on-ear headphones are a slight edge in portability and weight, while the over-ear style is better at blocking outside noise and is usually tops in sound quality.

4. Do you need noise-cancellation?

Headphones and piano

Noise-cancellation can be a must if you want the headphones for long flights or subway commutes. Perhaps you want to save your ears some pain by blocking outside noises, rather than cranking up the volume. It's a feature that you can now find in just about any model, although it's usually most successful in the over-ear designs.
Passive noise-cancelling headphones add extra bulk to the earpad to keep unwanted sounds from reaching your ear drums. While this is an effective approach for small noises, it won't block out a jet engine's rumble. Active noise-cancelling headphones can silence some of the lower-frequency sound waves, thanks to a physics phenomenon called "destructive interference."
This approach can take on just about any background noise, but there is a small chance the active approach will muffle parts of the song you're listening to. Again, your trade-off comes down to a question of audio fidelity.

5. What's with wireless?

Another option worth considering is wireless. Especially for people who want flexibility and do a lot of listening on the go, the chance to untether from wires has a large appeal. New advances with Bluetooth have made it possible to achieve solid sound quality with this model, but that usually comes at a cost. Also, wireless still requires the sound to be compressed, although the best models will try to counteract those effects.
In general, if top-notch, uncompressed sound quality is your goal, this may not be the headphone style for you.

6. Brand isn't everything (for most people).

A handful of brands lead the market for headphones. For example, Bose has legitimate scientific credentials, and Beats by Dre boasts serious celebrity backing. Both of them also have the price tags to match. Brand is really only going to be a major factor for shoppers who want to get as close to a surround-sound stereo experience as possible. These audiophiles probably have a few brands in mind already: Sennheiser and Grado usually top the lists for both quality and price.
The majority of buyers shouldn't put too much stock in the particular company that's making your headphones. Especially if you're seeking out the best quality for the best deal, be willing to explore the less obvious choices. Big tech companies from Sony to Panasonic to Yamaha have great headphones on the market, and many other audio specialist brands have reasonable price tags.

7. Sound with style.

If you've decided on the most important factors and you have multiple options within your budget, give the edge to the ones that look best. When headphones will be a major part of your day-to-day life, appearances matter a tiny bit. Find a color or a design that speaks to you, once you've met all your other criteria.

Extortion is thriving in cyberspace, with malwares denying user access to thier computers or files until they pay a ransom. I am talking about the malware Ransomware which have its root in many parts of the world incuding Pune, India. The recent article of The Times of India reads about many business executives from Pune who have either lost thier important files or paid the ransom amount.

Like most of the malwares, ransomware spreads through social-engineering attacks that include e-mail attachments. I don't know why people open such kinds of e-mail from an unknown sender. When you can't accept food package from strangers why to do you accept mails from them.

There are differnet types of ransomware in the web now, like the cryptolocker, revation, etc. but all of them have one thing in common - they will encrypt your files and deny access until you pay the ransom. Just like the real world extortion.

If your PC gets affected with one these ransomware you'll get a message showing the time left to pay ransom and the ransom amount. If you fail to pay the ransom money (generally around $100-$300, can be higher), you'll loose all your datas, pictures, movies, etc and they include your personal photos and videos.

How is this possible?

Is this the question that popped in your mind?
Cryptolocker encrypt users’ files using asymmetric encryption, which requires both a public and private key.
The public key is used to encrypt and verify data, while private key is used for decryption, each the inverse of the other.
Below is an image from Microsoft depicting the process of asymmetric encryption.
assemcrypto
The bad news is decryption is impossible unless a user has the private key stored on the cybercriminals’ server.

Removal :
Till the current date it is very difficult to remove the malware and recover the files safely, Following the old saying, prevention is better than cure, you can protect your loving PC with a good quality antivirus or malware remover like malwarebytes etc. and by not foolishly opening any spam you get from a stranger. Remember no one can secure the data unless you want to.
Here's a quick video from the malwarebytes.org
One thing that I found strange is, they are still using XP. Maybe there's a reason behind it. Who knows?

You can download the pro version or the free version of malwarebytes on their website.

the new PS4

Sony brings out another promo video of the much awaiting Play Station PS4. In this vodeo they have shown a gloved man unveiling a brand new PS4 box and showing everything you get along with the gaming console inside the box. Watching the video for the first time, I got a feel of a hollywood sci-fi movie featuring a man who is taking out an extraordinary gadget that can control the whole universe, well, I am not sure about the universe but it will certainly control the way you play games.

Following equipments can be seen in the video, network voucher, quick start guide, DualShock 4 controller, HDMI cable, power cord, USB cable, mono headset and, finally, the 500GB PS4 itself.

It all occurs in some sort of server room, and the video ends with the man uttering the official PS4 slogan: "Greatness awaits". The gaming console arrives in the store this Friday
(15 nov 2013), so let's wait few more days for the sci-fi unviverse controller :p .

Not impressed by the Micromax Canvas Turbo?

Here are the best alternatives.

A couple of days ago, I posted about the new Micromax Canvas Turbo. (Read Here). Priced at a range of 20,000 INR the new Turbo offers you some great features but still if you think, Turbo isn't your match, I've come up with the best alternatives to Canvas Turbo that you can be considered as the next smarty gadget in your pocket.

Phones such as the Canvas Turbo, Xolo Q1000S, Lenovo P780,WickedLeak Wammy Passion Z Plus, Lemon A4, Gionee E Life E6 and more run on the MediaTek chipset and try to distinguish themselves with their design, display, preloaded apps, camera features and more. Since the chipset is essentially the same, the smartphones suffer from similar problems such as graphically heavy apps lagging, etc.

Let us increase our budget by a few thousand rupee more and compare phones like the galaxy s3, xperia SP and nexus 4.

If you are not using your phone for playing high-end games or running apps that require a good amount of power, then you can go for the Canvas Turbo.

The Xperia SP has a dual-core processor and the highest battery capacity of the lot. The best thing about the nexus phones are that they  recieve all the android updates first and its perfect for those who want a vanilla android experience. The S3 comes with Samsung’s suite of preloaded apps and the TouchWiz UI, which is one of the better UI’s, available on Android smartphones. The Sony Xperia SP is a well-built smartphone, has a good camera and even though it has a dual-core processor, it is a snappy performer. It also has a great battery life.

SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU AIM FOR?

Let us look at all the options we have.

Our first contender is the nexus 4

It borrows design elements from the iPhone 4 and had a glass back. This is susceptible to scratches and is easily breakable but it looks really cool. Another cool design element with the Nexus 4 is the textured design beneath the rear glass panel that looks good when it's reflecting light. A perfect gadget to stand above the crowd.

Coming to the Sony product, the Galaxy S3 brings with it the standard plastic build found on other Samsung devices.

Sure, this is a drawback for most users, but you do have access to the battery (which you don’t on the Nexus 4 and the Canvas Turbo).

Xperia SP
The Xperia SP on the other hand is a good-looking smartphone with a grey border around the body. The smartphone is heavy, weighing 155 grams but it is very well built, with the ability to sustain a few drops. All four smartphones bring interesting design elements to the table and it is a subjective decision as to which one you prefer.

The Micromax Canvas Turbo is a good phone for the features on offer. It brings with it a slew of preloaded apps found on a large number of Samsung smartphones and the iFloat app gives you real multitasking capabilities on the smartphone. It does have its share of bugs and lags nonetheless.
Compare specifications here
If you want an Android experience that goes beyond the run of the mill, we would advise you to extend your budget and pick up one of of these three alternatives.
